Ethical Issues of Access

In order to support equitable access to critical care services, it is imperative that treatment plans and decisions are based on informed consent and respect individual autonomy and religious diversity of patients.

CCSO has developed a Critical Care Access and Consent Toolkit designed to help healthcare providers with the decision-making process for identifying appropriate treatment plans that include the clinician, the patient or their substitute decision maker.  The Toolkit aims to clarify the ethical obligations embedded in the consent process, address the complex communication amongst healthcare providers, patients and their substitute decision-makers/family members at end-of-life. This Toolkit will also encourage healthcare providers to employ and share innovative approaches to achieve ideal care and outcomes in critical care services.
