The Nurse Practitioner's Association of Ontario (NPAO) along with CCSO held an educational webinar for nurse practitioners on the Provincial Guidelines on the Management of Epilepsy in Adults and Children. The webinar was conducted by Dr. Carter Snead and Maria Zak of the Epilepsy Implementation Task Force and highlighted topics such as diagnosis, patient/caregiver education, surgical referral pathway and follow-up.
Care of Cervical Orthosis Devices and Collar Care

The cervical collar is routinely for patients with confirmed or suspected spine instabilities. The prevalence of cervical collar use in the treatment of critically ill patients necessitates the need for health care professionals to be competent in the use and management of cervical orthosis devices. The presentation on "Care of Cervical Orthosis Devices and Collar Care" teaches health care professionals the skills and knowledge needed to appropriately care for and manage patients requiring cervical collars. This presentation provides direction for cervical collar care use and management and is not meant to be exhaustive. Its contents are recommended but not mandated for use. RNs should use their clinical judgment and utilize other assessment parameters if determined necessary.
Intracranial Pressure (ICP)-Causes, Concerns and Management
Click here to view the OTN presentation
Rising Intracranial Pressure (ICP) is a primary concern of any injury or disease state involving the components of the cranial vault. Injuries or conditions that can cause these internal mechanisms to fail have the potential for a fatal outcome if not identified early, acted upon quickly and managed effectively. The presentation "Intracranial Pressure: Causes, Concerns and Management" helps nurses and other frontline staff to identify the injuries and disease processes that may cause intracranial pressure to rise. The learning objectives are:
- Care strategies to assist with lowering or managing rising ICP
Care of Patient Post-Craniectomy (No Bone Flap)
Click here to view the OTN presentation
Craniectomy is a neurosurgical procedure that involves removing a portion of the skull, where the patient's scalp is closed without re-implantation of the bone, leaving a resultant cranial defect.
The presentation "Care of Patient Post-Craniectomy (No Bone Flap)" provides direction for how to provide nursing care to adult and paediatric patients post-craniectomy to ensure consistency within and across organizations. The learning objectives are:
Differentiating between craniotomy and craniectomy, and describe implications for a craniectomy
Summarize the risks and complications related to craniectomy
Understand nursing intervention related to caring for a patient with a craniectomy
Post Op Complications Following a Craniotomy

Craniotomy is a neurosurgical procedure where the cranial cavity is accessed through the removal of bone to perform a variety of brain surgeries. Once the surgery is completed, the bone flap is returned to its previous position. The presentation "Post Op Complications Following a Craniotomy" provides direction on how to provide nursing care to adult and paediatric patients experiencing complications post neurosurgery to ensure consistency within and across organizations. The learning objectives are:
- Explain the complications that can arise from a craniotomy
- Recognize signs and symptoms of post-operative complications following a craniotomy
- Understand and perform appropriate nursing interventions and treatments
